Torres Vedras | Sustainable agriculture seminar highlights soil regeneration and climate-resilient practices
The 3rd Seminar “Sustainable Agriculture – Models for a Productive and Resilient Future”, organised by the Torres Vedras City Council, featured the closing event of the “Healthy Soils in Torres Vedras” project. It is Portugal’s only pilot within the European "HuMUS – Healthy Municipal Soils" initiative, funded by Horizon Europe. Over the past year, the project promoted sustainable soil management, especially in agricultural and viticultural areas of the Ventosa parish, through partnerships with local stakeholders and institutions. Key activities included soil health assessments, education campaigns, and collaborative solution development. A co-created Territorial Management Agreement aims to expand its reach to other areas and soil types in the municipality.
The seminar highlighted innovative agricultural models that address current and future challenges through practices that regenerate soil, improve water availability, and support biodiversity. Although these systems differ from conventional agriculture, they maintain high productivity while enhancing ecosystem services. By promoting carbon and water retention in soils, these approaches contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
