Emmaus Community Reuse Network

05 June 2013

The Emmaus Community of Ile-de-France entrust ‘Emmaus Défi’ for the collection of objects (WEEE, furniture, textile,…) that they cannot provide. ‘Emmaus Défi’ operates like a business - but a company with a social utility, not for profit and providing employment for low skilled or those facing difficulties finding a job in the normal circuit. The business activity is to recover used equipment and materials all kind. ‘Emmaus Défi’ also receives direct deposits of objects usually brought by local residents. The collected objects are centralized in two warehouses (Saint-Denis Fortin), sorted and directed to the ‘bric-a-brac’ shops. Objects are sold in the shops, ensuring half the resources of the association and the employment of employees. Unmarketable objects are transferred to the recycling industries, including ‘Relay’ for textiles and ‘ecosystems’ for WEEE. More than 40 m3 of textiles are transferred to relay every month. Some of the objects are reserved for the poorest families.

‘Emmaus Défi’ is recognized as "integration project" by the Departmental Directorate of Labour, Employment and Vocational Training of Paris. As such, the association receives funding for its employees in integration and its operation is regularly monitored. ‘Emmaus Défi’ has a team of 18 permanent employees, 70 employees in insertion and a network of 200 volunteers (2010 figures).
