Hazards Out! workshop explores role of producers in household hazardous waste management
On 24 September 2025, the third Hazards Out! Workshop explored the topic of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and whether it can play a role in managing household hazardous waste (HHW). Discussions highlighted producers’ perspectives and innovative recycling initiatives. A case study from the Netherlands showcased collaboration between AkzoNobel and Inter-CheM, who developed a professional-grade paint containing 35% recycled content, reducing carbon emissions by 32%. Presenters emphasized that consumer awareness, convenient collection systems, and cross-sector collaboration remain critical to scaling such solutions. France’s EcoDDS scheme—the only EPR model for HHW in Europe—was presented as a successful example of industry-led responsibility. Managing director Pierre Charlemagne outlined large-scale collection systems, automated sorting, and new treatment pathways for chemical waste, underlining the potential of EPR to share costs, expand infrastructure, and foster circular innovation.
The workshop concluded with calls for greater public engagement, stronger demand for recycled products, and supportive local infrastructure. If you were unable to join the workshop, you can find full recording on the Hazards Out YouTube channel and have a look at the presentation package freely available here. An event summary is also available here to capture the main issues and examples covered during the webinar. Further updates and information will be regularly shared on the Hazards Out project website.
