Home Composting promotion in Kent County (UK)

06 June 2013

Since 1996, the Kent Council has settled a home composting programme, and by adopting the first Kent Household Waste Strategy in 2003, each Kent Council municipality established realistic targets regarding home composting. The Home composting scheme has been settled in a propitious environment as 84% of Kent’s households have a garden. To successfully involve the population in home composting, some restrictions in the collection facilities are established and a municipal financing scheme is settled to subsidize compost bins. To promote home composting, collaboration with national (composting) networks has been established. From the beginning of the project all the stakeholders have been involved and brought together in the Kent Waste Open Forum. Promotional activities as radio shows, theatre events in schools were organized. Voluntary Master Composters assisting residents on how to compost at home were organized.
