LIPOR | Electric composter boosts sustainability at Santa Cruz do Bispo prison

The Santa Cruz do Bispo prison is now taking a further step toward sustainability with the installation of an electric composter, implemented by LIPOR in collaboration with the Municipality of Matosinhos and the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services. Following the creation of a community garden, this initiative enhances soil quality and promotes the efficient management of food waste, turning it into high-quality compost for use in the garden and green areas of the facility. 

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project also has a strong educational and social dimension, involving inmates and patients from the Psychiatric and Mental Health Clinic in the full organic cycle, from food production to waste recycling. This partnership reinforces LIPOR’s commitment to a circular economy, where bio-waste is transformed into valuable resources, generating a positive impact on both the environment and the community.
