Belfast City Council | New bin collection guidelines now in effect
Belfast City Council recently implemented updated bin collection guidelines to boost recycling, maintain cleaner streets, and protect collection crews. A new tagging system is now in place across the city: amber tags are issued as a first warning for bins that are overflowing or contain liners that interfere with collection equipment. Starting 29 September, bins with recurring issues will receive red tags and will not be emptied. Residents are reminded to keep bin lids fully closed, avoid using liners, sort recycling properly, and present bins correctly on collection day.
The council is encouraging residents to review the updated guidance through community posters, social media, and the official website, where FAQs and additional support are available. Free services such as access to recycling centres, civic amenity sites, and bulky waste collections remain available to help households manage their waste and reduce pressure on general bins.
