In a bid to enhance waste management and recycling efforts, the Brussels Region, involving Brussels Environment, has officially adopted an agreement with mattress producers regarding the disposal of used mattresses. Announced on 16 February, this initiative mandates producers and importers to fund the collection and recycling of their mattress waste, aligning with the principles of extended producer responsibility. To fulfil these obligations, the sector has chosen Valumat, a non-profit organisation representing mattress producers, to oversee the recycling process. The agreement covers both household and professional mattress waste. Its primary goals are to encourage waste prevention, enhance the management, recycling, and reuse of mattress materials, and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
