Government of Navarra | Turning household waste into high-quality ecological fertiliser
A pilot vermicomposting project in Lumbier is transforming household organic waste from the Sangüesa, Irati, and Bidausi regions in Navarra into high-quality ecological fertiliser. The initiative, called BioCompás, is funded with EUR 228 000 by the Rural Development Program of the Government of Navarra. Developed by the social enterprises in collaboration with the Public University of Navarre, the project has processed 1 000 tonnes of organic waste over 22 months.
In addition to implementing the vermicomposting system, in which worms decompose organic matter to produce nutrient-rich improved compost and evaluating the quality of the resulting compost, BioCompás has developed a portable module to transform vegetables grown using this system into product baskets for direct sale, actively involving people with disabilities in the process.
