According to a new study by ACR+ member Reloop, Zero Waste Europe and TOMRA, reusable take-away food packaging could be more beneficial for the climate than single-use alternatives if return and washing systems are properly implemented and optimised. The study looked at the GHG emissions associated across a wide range of common takeaway packaging, including cups, burger boxes, bowls, pizza boxes, and sushi containers, comparing single-use to reusable packaging in an optimised reuse system. The results indicate that, for most types of takeaway packaging used in Europe, reuse through a safe, efficient system for collection, washing, inspection, and redistribution has potential to yield greater environmental benefits than recycling or discarding single-use containers.
