The Hague | TrashUre Hunt campaign: keeping beaches butt-free
Since this summer, The Hague’s beaches have four smoke-free zones, reducing cigarette butt litter. Weekly, TrashUre Hunt campaign (carried out by a volunteer organization that works in collaboration with the municipality of The Hague) collects butts in smoke-free zones near the sports beach and pier to study whether these areas have less litter. Results will be available by the end of summer 2025 and will guide future beach policies. Smoke-free beaches are part of the municipality’s Waste and Coastal Action Plans, promoting cleaner, healthier, and more enjoyable beaches for everyone. TrashUre Hunt helps keep the beach clean and is hosting the “Filter Challenge” on 7 September at Noorderstrand. Volunteers are invited to join and collect cigarette butts.
