Government of Navarra | Towards greener festivities: sustainability plans for San Fermín

30 June 2025 Members' News

The Department of Environment of the Government of Navarra, the Pamplona City Council, and the Pamplona Region Commonwealth have joined forces to promote environmental sustainability and reduce single-use plastics during the San Fermín festivities. In a recent meeting, they reviewed the sustainability measures planned for this year's events and began coordinating for 2026, when the new regional Decree on Public Events and Sustainability will fully apply. Measures already in place include reusable cups, better waste separation, water refill stations, and sustainability planning support. A new working group on sustainable public events has also been launched to ensure effective implementation of the decree and shared strategies moving forward.

To improve waste management during San Fermín, the Commonwealth will replace underground waste collection points in the Old Town with separate waste containers and enhance glass collection services. Meanwhile, the City Council will begin discussions in September on a unified reusable cup system to reduce loss rates and improve traceability
