Lisbon | New information campaign to combat food waste
The municipality of Lisbon has joined Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies’ informational campaign to combat food waste, under the slogan “Knowing the difference makes a difference.” The initiative aims to help consumers understand food labeling, particularly the distinctions between “Use by”, “Best before”, and “Best before end of”, reducing social, environmental, and economic impacts of food waste. European studies show that household consumers are responsible for about 42% of food waste, often due to misunderstandings about expiration dates. Throughout October, the campaign seeks to educate the public on interpreting these dates to optimise food use and minimise waste. Distribution companies are also involved, implementing initiatives to inform consumers and reduce food loss across the supply chain, promoting sustainability, better household economics, and lower environmental impact.
