OVAM | Advancing circular leadership and waste reduction in Flanders
OVAM’s 2024 annual report highlights key progress toward a sustainable and circular future through collaboration. During the Belgian Presidency, OVAM shared its expertise internationally and built new global partnerships. They also raised soil awareness among the Flemish population, promoted reuse habits, and reinforced their role as a circular economy leader in Europe.
On waste, Flemish households generated an average of 421 kg of waste per person in 2023, a slight increase from 2022 due to a rise in green and organic waste. However, they still remained well below the 502 kg target set in the 2016–2022 plan. Residual waste dropped to 126.4 kg per person, exceeding reduction goals. In 2023, 70% of household waste was separately collected, with 63% recycled or composted, only 1.6% landfilled, and the rest largely incinerated with energy recovery.
