Waste collection LIPOR EN

Waste collection is a crucial step for circular economy strategies. Beyond the necessity to provide solutions for waste producers to get rid of their waste, it serves several essential purposes: ensuring a proper separation of waste to send it to proper treatment, enabling the sorting of homogenous, high-quality materials for re-use and recycling… Waste collection also acts as an interface between the waste producers and the general waste system, and can be effectively used to raise awareness on the necessity of waste prevention and proper separation at the source.

However, setting a proper waste collection system is challenging: beside the need to optimise the general logistics for an increasing number of streams, its success relies on the participation of waste producers to properly sort their waste. Waste collection is not only a technical subject: it also requires suitable information of its user and incentives to promote proper behaviours.

In a circular economy perspective, waste collection systems must face challenges from both the upstream, with an increasing diversity and complexity of waste to deal with, and the downstream, as its main point is to deliver sorted materials that are relevant for the recyclers.

To achieve the new recycling targets, current waste collection systems must be upgraded and the participation of waste producers must be enhanced. Public authorities have to develop innovative approaches in collaboration with the other actors of the recycling value chain: recyclers, producers, waste management companies… in order to ensure waste collection serves the objectives of circular economy.

The conference, organised by LIPOR in partnership with ACR+, discussed the role of waste selective collection in the circular economy, focusing on two different waste streams (plastic and bio-waste) but also on the future outlooks. It also presented the European context and the Portuguese approach to circular economy.
