ARC | New circular system that rewards packaging returns
RetornA is a pioneering circular economy initiative that rewards consumers for returning reusable meat trays to their stores. With the support of the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC), the project aims to reduce single-use packaging and promote sustainable, responsible consumption. Customers pay a EUR 0.45 deposit per tray at purchase and receive a EUR 0.50 refund upon return, encouraging active participation while offering more affordable prices by removing single-use packaging costs.
The pilot phase has launched in 57 stores in Tarragona and Guissona, with plans to expand across the bonÀrea network. The first product in this system in supermarkets is chicken breast, and more items will be added over time. The reusable trays are patented and feature a protective film to avoid direct contact with food, allowing easy return without washing. Returned trays are collected daily, then cleaned and inspected at the Guissona food center before re-entering the distribution cycle.
