Province of Fryslân | Circularity Gap Report: a regional model for global impact
The Circularity Gap Report Friesland, developed by Province of Fryslân in collaboration with Circle Economy, marks the first Dutch regional effort to measure and close the circularity gap by 2035. Friesland’s circular transition is guided by the Frisian Model—an integrated, locally driven approach that unites businesses, governments, and knowledge institutions in a Triple Helix framework. This model emphasizes place-based leadership, using regional collaboration and data-driven strategies to foster circular innovation rooted in local strengths.
Friesland views circularity not just as an environmental strategy, but as a means to tackle broader social and economic challenges. Anchored in seven key pillars and driven by active regional clusters in water technology, materials, and soil, the region focuses on “global challenges, local solutions.” With a strong system of monitoring and accountability in place, Friesland’s cooperative and action-oriented model serves as a scalable example of how regions can lead the global shift toward a resilient and sustainable circular economy.
We will discover their circular economy model during the ACR+ General Assembly 2025 in Leeuwarden, taking place from 10 to 12 June 2025, alongside the Circular Summit Fryslân 2025.
