Government of Navarra | Navarra leads the way in household waste separation
The region of Navarra has achieved a new high in the separate collection of household waste, reaching 53% of the total. This places the autonomous community at the forefront in Spain for meeting targets related to waste collection and management. In 2024, Navarran residents and businesses generated 280,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste. Notably, the amount of household waste deposited in designated separate collection bins and recycling centres saw a 5% increase, equating to nearly 7,000 additional tonnes of municipal waste. This improvement has pushed the overall separate collection rate up by two percentage points.
José Mari Aierdi, the Regional Minister for Rural Development and Environment, highlighted Navarra's leading position nationally in fulfilling waste management objectives, particularly in separate collection. While acknowledging a less positive figure for landfill, currently at 47% and exceeding the 2027 target of 35%, the Minister expressed optimism for a significant shift in 2026. The anticipated opening of the new Environmental Centre of the Pamplona Region in Imarcoain later this year, which will process 64,000 tonnes of residual waste currently going to landfill, is expected to drastically reduce landfill rates to below 25% by 2027. Increases were noted in the separate collection of light packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, textiles, and paper and cardboard, while glass and bio-waste saw slight decreases. A change in the waste collection model in the Montejurra region, moving from four to five waste streams, has significantly contributed to the overall increase in separate collection rates.
