Greater Pamplona | Reduction of carbon footprint by 36% since 2014 through waste initiatives

07 July 2025 Members' News

In 2024, Greater Pamplona reduced its carbon footprint by 12% compared to 2023, marking a 36% drop since 2014. That year, the region began annually calculating and registering their carbon footprint through a certified company and the National Registry. In 2024, total greenhouse gas emissions reached 38,413 tons of CO₂eq, with 4% from the Water Cycle, 26% from urban transport, and 70% from waste management.

To reduce emissions, Greater Pamplona has implemented several initiatives: expanding organic waste collection through the 5th bin and composting programs, introducing hybrid and electric buses, and using renewable energy sources like hydrothermal systems and biomass boilers. They’ve also installed solar panels and gas-powered trucks, and promoted smart containers. A key goal is to stop landfilling organic waste by opening the Environmental Center in 2026.
