LIPOR | Strategic roadmap for biowaste management in Porto
LIPOR and Porto Ambiente, together with the renowned Wageningen University & Research, developed an international project to create a strategic roadmap for managing biowaste in the Municipality of Porto. Aligned with the EU’s 2030 goals, the plan aims to transform the waste system into a more circular, efficient, and inclusive model. Between 3 and 12 June, a multidisciplinary team of Wageningen students conducted fieldwork, collecting over 500 surveys and 20 interviews with key stakeholders, citizens, and local restaurants.
Preliminary results revealed that 78% of respondents practice organic waste reduction and 61% separate their organic waste. However, many still dispose of organic waste in general waste bins. Key factors affecting separation include the proximity and cleanliness of organic waste containers, as well as environmental impact awareness. Expanding the organic waste collection system and strengthening awareness campaigns were identified as strategic priorities.
