OVAM | Documentary explores Flanders’ soil remediation journey

23 June 2025 Members' News

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Flemish Soil Decree, OVAM has released a documentary titled “Oude gronden, nieuwe kansen” (Old Grounds, New Opportunities). The film showcases the potential of redeveloping contaminated sites in Flanders and reflects on three decades of soil policy through five pioneering projects across the region. These include the transformation of coal mines in Limburg, the revitalization of the Renault site in Vilvoorde-Machelen, the circular hub O.666 in Ostend, the redevelopment of Petroleum-Zuid in Antwerp, and the conversion of the old gas plant De Tondelier in Ghent into a sustainable neighborhood. Each case illustrates how formerly polluted sites are being reclaimed for ecological, recreational, or residential use.

The documentary also looks ahead, emphasising the importance of sustainable, regenerative, and circular redevelopment. OVAM advocates for soil care that focuses on prevention, restoration, reuse of existing structures, and supporting circular activities that maintain the soil’s vital functions such as CO₂ capture, water buffering, and biodiversity. Contributions from key voices in environmental policy, academia, and redevelopment reflect on the progress made and the challenges ahead, reinforcing Flanders’ role as a pioneer in soil remediation policy.
