EMULSA | Installation of anti-odour plates in organic and residual waste containers to combat summer smells
EMULSA, Gijón’s municipal environmental services company, has begun installing 1 500 anti-odour plates in organic and residual waste containers as part of a special summer plan to reduce unpleasant smells. This initiative, launched in response to increased complaints during the previous summer, includes both the chemical plates—designed to neutralize odour-causing compounds and repel insects—and an intensified container cleaning schedule combining internal and outsourced resources. The first 240 plates are being placed in areas with the most complaints, and the rollout will continue until all units are installed.
The project, with a budget of EUR 84 796, also includes hiring five new sanitation workers and acquiring a new container-washing truck to strengthen EMULSA’s own workforce and reduce future reliance on external services. While the measures won’t eliminate odours entirely, EMULSA expects a significant improvement, aided by more frequent organic waste collection and intensified cleaning. Citizens are reminded to follow proper waste disposal practices to help maximise the effectiveness of these efforts.
