Zero Waste Scotland | Call for joint action on food waste to protect the planet
New research from Zero Waste Scotland reveals that food waste is driving severe environmental damage beyond its known impact on climate change; contributing significantly to biodiversity loss, water consumption, land use pressures, and air pollution. The organisation will lead the development of a Household Intervention Plan for Food Waste Reduction on behalf of the Scottish Government to address this growing crisis.
Data shows that food waste is Scotland’s top cause of biodiversity loss and land use change, and second only to textiles in water and climate impacts. With GBP 1.3 billion (EUR 1.52 billion) worth of edible food discarded from homes each year, Zero Waste Scotland is urging coordinated national efforts to change behaviours and recognise food waste as a major environmental issue, not just a matter of waste.
