OVAM, Wallonia and Brussels Environment | Record amount of electronic waste collected in Belgium in 2024
BeWeee, the Belgian app for complying with reporting obligations for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), supporting OVAM, Wallonia, and Brussels Environment, has presented the 2024 collection data. In total, 181 452 tonnes of WEEE were reported in 2024, a 7% increase compared to 2023 and the highest figure since BeWeee’s creation in 2017. Of this total, 45 515 tonnes were reported directly through BeWeee, nearly seven times more than seven years ago. Most of the reported equipment consists of household appliances, while the share of photovoltaic panels varies each year. In 2024, 55 976 tonnes of solar panels were placed on the market.
Belgium achieved a collection rate of 61.93% (excluding solar panels), and the overall rate, including solar panels, reached 51.31%, slightly higher than in 2023. BeWeee aims to further improve reporting accuracy and increase the collection rate to 65% in the coming years by encouraging companies and organisations to meet their obligations both individually and collectively.
